The Window Effect: the power of natural light for your pre-ceremony wedding portraits

This article is going to walk you through one of our top tips for your wedding day. These photos are always a must when couples are looking through our portfolio!

Pre-ceremony shots

Firstly, let's say that pre-ceremony shots are so fun to shoot. Your wedding day begins in the dressing room and those special moments shared between you and your wedding party should definitely be captured.

During this time we want to capture the intimate moments shared between you and your closest friends and family members as you get ready for the biggest day of your life!

We recommend making time for:

  • A first look photoshoot between you and your parents and/or wedding party

  • The moment your veil is secured into your hair

  • Your wedding party helping you with the final touches to your outfit

  • A handful of shots in front of the mirror as final details are added to your makeup or hair

What do we mean by the window effect?!

The window effect is simply the use of a window to capture your pre-ceremony portraits in natural light.

Trust us when we say, it will make a dramatic impact on your pre-ceremony photos.

The ideal getting-ready space will be well-lit through large windows. The less unnatural light the better! Daylight is just softer.

To really enhance these photos, aim for a space that has light-coloured walls, light-coloured flooring, and interesting decor to add depth to the images. For example if you can bring some of your wedding flowers into the room where you are getting ready, this will help to elevate these shots.

What to do if we don’t have access to a window?

If your pre-ceremony space doesn't have access to a window, you may have torecreate those ‘getting-ready’ moments in another space. Scout out the property for an area that's naturally flooded with light like a doorway or potentially even another room.
